Student Visa - Vitem IV

 

  • This type of visa can be issued to persons who travel to Brazil as students, enrolled in a duly recognized school, institution of technical studies, university or institution of higher learning, accredited by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC); students on scholarship or exchange programs with a Brazilian institution of higher learning;
  • Religious workers who intend to travel to Brazil as students of any level.

INTERNATIONAL VACCINATION CERTIFICATE

Applicants who have visited any of the countries listed below within the previous 90 days, must present a Yellow Fever International Certificate upon entering Brazil:

 Yellow fever vaccination is recommended if applicant intends to visit one of the following regions in Brazil: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins.  

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • Student Visa (Vitem IV) holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil;
     
  • Student Visa (Vitem IV) will be valid for up to 1 year; in Brazil, one month prior to visa expiration, applicant may file a request for an extension with the Federal Police Department;

PROCESSING TIME

             Please, plan your trip accordingly in order to have your visa issued on time. We do not expedite visa. In case of emergency, please come in person to the Consulate with all supporting documentation.

                         By mail: 10 business days. It also applies to those who submit their application in person but leave an Express mail in order to have their document returned by mail.
                     In person: 3 business days.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS 

    1)      Original passport (valid for at least 6 (six) months prior to its expiration date). The passport must have at least 2 (two) blank visa pages; 

    2)      One recent individual passport photo, full-frontal, white background; 

    3)      One electronic visa application form - click here. Please, make sure to provide full information, even those supposedly not required. If you leave any field blank, we may request you to provide that information what could cause your application to be delayed or even refused. Glue your picture (DO NOT STAPLE IT!) and sign on the appropriate field. 

    4)      Yellow Fever International Certificate (when applicable); 

    5)      Those applying either by mail or by a third party must present proof of residence within the jurisdiction of this Consulate for the past 12 months (Florida, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Island): Driver’s License or utility bills issued within the past 12 months); 

    6)      Applicants under 18 years of age must present both copy and original of the birth certificate and a notarized letter of consent signed by both parents or legal guardian(s) authorizing the Consulate General of Brazil to issue a visa for the minor applicant; 

    7)      For children of Brazilian citizens, provide a notarized letter stating that the child has never been registered as Brazilian citizens in any Brazilian Embassy or Consulate, nor has never had a Brazilian passport previously. Please note: although Brazilian authorities do not legally require written authorization for US citizens under 18 to travel without both or one of the parents, we do recommend that minors in this situation entering Brazil or traveling within the country to carry such a document; 

    8)      Brazilian citizens must travel to Brazil with a Brazilian passport. Those who have renounced the Brazilian citizenship must present proof; 

    9)      Proof of financial ability to pay for one's stay in Brazil; 

    10)  Proof of enrollment in the institution/ school certifying that applicant will be attending a course of study (usually, a letter from the school/ institution in Brazil certifying that applicant is enrolled for a prescribed course of study); 

    11)  For stays longer than 90 days and for applicants 18 years of age or older, recent non-criminal record certificate issued by applicant's local Police Department.

FEE 

  • The fee has to be paid by US Postal Money Order OR receipt provided by the ATM machine located at the Consulate's main lobby. The ATM only accepts cash and charges US$ 1.00 for the service.
  • We do not accept cash, personal check or any other form of payment not listed above.

 *Attention: if you are applying for an immediate family member, you are not required to pay the handling fee of US$ 20.00. 

VISAS BY MAIL  

  • Please allow 12 (twelve) business days for processing of visa application and return of passport, not including transit time. This processing time applies from the moment application is received at the Consulate.
     
  • Inquiries about the status of your visa application will only be provided if the processing time required by this Office has passed. Please confirm at the Post Office with your tracking number the exact date your application was received at the Consulate, otherwise consular officers will not be able to provide you with any information.
     
  • The Consulate will receive correspondence sent by the U.S. Postal Service as well as all courier services (address the envelope to the attention of the Visa Section). However, the Consulate will only return documents via the U.S. Postal Service Express Mail. Applicants must therefore enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of their documents.
     
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications will be returned to sender.
     
  • The Consulate will not accept envelopes which contain more than one application. Such envelopes will be returned except when the documents belong to members of the immediate family.
     
  • The Consulate is not responsible for delayed, lost or stolen mail.
