PRESS RELEASE N. 10 – 03/31/2008 

183 students from Broward`s County public schools have taken part in the contest on Brazilian culture and the winners will be awarded the prizes by the Consulate General of Brazil in May. 
         On May 10th, the award ceremony of the 2nd Contest of monographs, drawings and paintings will take place in the ABDO New River Room of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, during the FOCUS-BRAZIL International Conference on Brazilian Culture and the Media. The contest was promoted by the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami and this year the theme was Brazilian culture: enriched by the diversity of its people”.

Best High School Monographs

1st place (US$ 1,500.00)

Noemi Bermudez, 10th grade student of McFatter Technical High School

2nd Place (US$ 1,000.00)

Michael Hoff, 11th grade student of Cypress Bay High School

3rd Place (US$ 500.00)

Kelsie Hoecherl, 12th grade student of the Cooper City High School

 

Best Middle School Monographs

1st place (US$ 1,500.00)

Sydney Brautman, 6th grade student of Pioneer Middle School

2nd place (US$ 1,000.00)

Isabella Castrillon, 7th grade student of Indian Ridge Middle School

3rd place (US$ 500.00)

Hannah Katz, 6th grade student of the Pioneer Middle School

 

Best drawings or paintings

1st Place (US$ 500.00)

Raquel Ruiz of the North Andrews Gardens Elementary

2nd Place (US$ 300.00)

Amber Duclos, 5th grade student of the Cooper City Elementary

3rd Place (US$ 100.00)

Kaitlin Farrell, 5th grade student of the Cooper City Elementary

 59 students from middle schools and 18 from high schools participated in the contest of monographs, while 106 primary students have taken part in the contest of drawings and paintings.
         The juries were Paulo de Souza Amado, head of the Cultural Sector of the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami; Marla Armstrong, Art Curriculum Specialist, Broward County School System; Adriana Sabino, president of the Brazil-US Cultural Center; Augusta Vono, Portuguese language Professor at Florida International University; and Romero Britto, a renowned Brazilian painter.
         The 20 best monographs (10 from middle and 10 from high schools) will be published and distributed to schools during the next September 7th, Brazilian National Day.
