Contest Rules and Regulations

1. The Consulate-General of Brazil in Miami is promoting, for the second year, an essay contest open to all middle and high school students attending Broward County Public Schools.

2. There will be three cash prizes awarded for the best entries for middle school students and three for high school students: 1st place, $1500; 2nd place, $1000; and 3rd place, $500.

3. Entries must be original unpublished works on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. They must be no less than five (5) pages and no more than eight (8) pages long. The pages must be double-spaced and in 12” font with 1” margins. Essays must be written on the theme of “Brazilian Culture: Enriched by the Diversity of its People”. Essays may not be in binders, folios, or other presentation folder.

4. The works must demonstrate the research done and will be judged on historical correctness, originality, and creativity. Attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style is expected. Bibliographies and reference sources must be included; entries without bibliography will be disqualified.

5. Two copies of the essay entry with valid Entry Form attached must be turned in to the school on or before January 25, 2008 to be eligible. The Diversity & Cultural Outreach Department shall set up the procedures for the collection of essays by the schools.

6. Each student may enter only one essay. The entry and copy must be submitted unsigned and attached to a valid signed Entry Form.

7. There must be, at least, six qualified essays at each level (Middle and High School) – if this number is not met, the contest shall be cancelled.

8. Judging the entries will be a two-part process. Preliminary judging will be conducted at the community level by March 5. The procedures for the pre-selection of the essays will be established by the Diversity & Cultural Outreach Department. After the pre-selection of essays by the Judging Panel, the Diversity & Cultural Outreach Department will forward selected entries to the Consulate-General of Brazil in Miami to be judged by the Main Commission.

9. The Main Commission will be headed by the Consul- General and will include a representative from the School Board, the Diversity & Cultural Outreach Department, the Broward County Public Schools PTA, the Cultural Center Brazil-USA, the Cultural Sector of the Consulate-General of Brazil and a representative from the Universities. The Main Commission shall select the best three essays for middle school, and the best three for high school, for the cash prizes. An additional seven will be selected to receive a book about Brazil. The Consulate-General shall, at this point, match the essays with the entry form to identify the winners. The winners will be notified by March 21st, 2008.

10. Winners, parents, and teachers will be invited to an award ceremony in April 2008, where the students will be recognized.

11. The top twenty essays (ten from middle school and ten from high school) will be published and copies distributed to the schools for next year’s celebration of the Brazilian National Day, September 7, 2008.

12. Entries become the property of the Consulate-General of Brazil in Miami. By participating in this competition, entrants agree to the rules and the decisions of the judges, which shall be final in all respects.

The Consulate General of Brazil is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Essay Contest for all middle and high school students in Broward County Public Schools. The winners will be notified in March 2008, and the prizes and awards will be presented at a ceremony in April 2008, date to be confirmed.

All entries must be no less than five (5) pages and no more than eight (8) pages long. The pages must be double-spaced and in 12” font with 1” margins. Essays must be written on the theme of “Brazilian Culture: Enriched by the Diversity of its People”.
