Priscilla Pamato

Third Place

Hello my name is Priscilla I am a Brazilian Monarch High student at Broward County. The Brazilian population brought great changes to Broward in many different ways such as fashion, culture, foods, points of view, jobs and churches. Each of these changes has created an important impact on the present of Broward. We were having different lives until the Brazilian population started to grow here and mixed in the cultures and made a new culture. In Broward County, there are Brazilian people wherever you go and it is easy to find a Brazilian person and even communicate with one. Here are some details about some of the qualities that Brazilian people have added to Broward County.

The first quality I am going to talk about is points of views and cultures of the Brazilian people. Brazilian people like to party and smile all time, which brings happiness to the beaches, schools, malls, parks and even supermarkets. The Brazilians children's are smart, but when they have time, the first thing they do is play outside and that gives a sweet happiness to the streets. It is easy to define who is Brazilian, but its hard to have the same enthusiasm and energy as they do. The Brazilian people, added color to Broward County. The Brazilian own way of thinking and of seeing things have also brought a lighter side of the way of living. In the other hand, when they see that their rights are being taken away or they see injustices around them, they always fight for what's right.

Another important quality that Brazilians have added to Broward County, is the creation of businesses. Businesses create jobs and increase exports and investments to the economy. That also increases the quality of life of people living in Broward County. These businesses have also helped Florida with tourism. Because of Brazilians stores, restaurants and supermarkets Broward County has become better place to visit or to have a family vacation, and even to live. Ever since Brazilians have created these businesses, other people of different cultures, have also created their businesses, and with that the government has grown a little more. Since tax revenues have also benefited it. With the opening of more stores and restaurants, government will receive more revenues and this will revive the economy of Broward County. Brazilian people have made a difference to the Broward economy.

For American girls, the Brazilian population brought a different fashion to the area by things such as jeans, tops and bikinis. The Brazilians have added new designs to beach wear. They are known for their beachwear fashion because of their beautiful bikinis. Jeans are very different from Brazil. When Brazilian stores started to grow here, lots of American girls changed their looks by changing American jeans to Brazilian jeans. Brazilian jeans make girl's bodies look more defined. There are other fashion designs displayed in beautiful tops. Brazilian tops have lots of glitter, beautiful drawings and very different designs. They are also very colorful. Finally, the dresses. They are the most wanted ones. They make American girls look more beautiful.

The next quality that Brazilian people have added to the life in Broward County is the food. In the Brazilian culture, food is very important and a significant part of it. There are many different dishes such as manjar de coco (coconut mousse), ximxim de galinha, (chicken and shrimp served with rice) quindim (coconut candy) and some traditional dishes that are arroz com feijao (rice and beens) and carreteiro de frango ou carne (rice
mixed with meat or chicken). Anyone is able to purchase these delicious Brazilian foods all over Broward County. Brazilian people opened restaurants, bakeries and supermarkets that offer the entire Broward population these foods, or ingredients if you want to make them yourself. And other than that, Brazilians have their own way to offering you a delicious dish by making and selling it from their homes. This phenomenon is called marmita. Marmita is home-cooked meals placed in large tin containers and sold to people who crave home-cooked meals, but do not have the time to make it. You can order what you want by telephone and get it delivered to your house. Other great thing that Brazilian people brought to Broward County was the rodizio de pizza. Rodizio means "all-you-can-eat". Brazilians were one of the first people to come out with that concept. This concept began in steak houses - or churrascaria. These steak houses are expensive here in the United States because beef is more expensive here than in Brazil. However, the concept spread to other kinds of restaurants. Now, you are able to easily find an "all-you-can-eat" pizza restaurant and even all you can eat sushi!

With all this wonderful thing that Brazilian brought to Broward County such as culture fashion and food, we can conclude that the immigration of Brazilians bought a development in many areas of Broward County. Some people notice that Brazilian population made some great changes for the good of Broward. In my opinion the first Brazilians that got here should be recognized for all this great changes. One of the biggest change that Brazilians bought was music and foods, parties, such as, The Brazilian Day, this is a big event that happens one time a year playing Brazilians songs and every year they bring a different group and also they serve tents with Brazilians popular food. Most of the Brazilian population that came to live here was in search for a
better life, were there children could have a future or teenagers that left every thing behind to have a better future and here in Broward County they found these opportunities. And with the crises in the United States lots of people would be with no job, but with restaurants, stores and supermarket that Brazilian developed here created opportunities for families to have a life, food and a home.
